Uninstall Acoustic Stub Microphones - SM5

If your acoustic stub microphones are damaged, you can uninstall them for replacement.

About this task

Important: We recommend only uninstalling your acoustic stub microphones if you need to replace them. Repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling a stub microphone risks damaging the wires that connect the microphone to the SM5.

The acoustic stub microphones are well-protected from weather and can be safely left installed on the recorder, even when they are not in use. If you want an extra layer of protection for any unused stub microphones, we recommend installing a protective cover rather than uninstalling them.

You will need the following:

  • 5/8″ open wrench or adjustable wrench
  • Replacement acoustic stub microphone or plastic hex bolt

Procedure

  1. Using your fingers or needle-nose pliers, gently disconnect the stub microphone connector from the port on the inside lower face of the SM5.

Both microphone connectors are at the lower-right corner of the enclosure interior, on a circuit board below the battery compartment. The Right microphone connector is at the far right of the circuit board, and the Left microphone connector is immediately to the left.
  2. If the microphone is installed tightly, use a 5/8″ or adjustable wrench to slightly loosen it.
  3. Use one hand to unscrew the microphone counter-clockwise, and use your other hand to rotate the microphone wires in the same direction.
This avoids twisting and damaging the microphone wires.

  4. When the microphone is fully removed, take care to leave the white plastic hex nut installed inside the SM5 enclosure.
This nut is necessary to install a replacement microphone or plastic hex bolt.
