At the top of the front face of the SM5 is a printed label with a cutout for the Activity LED. Below the printed label is a rounded plastic panel, flush with the main body of the enclosure. This panel protects a connection point for future accessories.

The serial number label is at the top of the left face of the enclosure. The left acoustic stub microphone is at the bottom-left corner.

The SM5 enclosure latches closed on the right side. Near the middle of the right face, a padlock loop can be used to lock the latch shut. The right acoustic stub microphone is at the bottom-right corner.

Along the top edge of the enclosure, there are two loops to fit a cable lock and one smaller loop to use a screw to mount the SM5. At the top of the rear face is a threaded mounting point compatible with tripods and similar camera mounts. At the left and right rear edges of the enclosure are rectangular loops designed for 1-inch-wide webbing.

On the bottom face of the enclosure, there are three connectors protected by weatherproof, press-on covers. From left to right, the ports are: External Microphone 1, External Power, and External Microphone 2. There is also a small cluster of holes—a moisture and pressure vent.

When you open the SM5, it should lay open like a book with the latch flap on the left side. At the top-left of the left panel is the power switch, with "On" as the upper position. The clock battery is visible at the top-middle of the panel, with the battery insertion slot along the upper edge. The Pair button and a Bluetooth status LED are located at the upper-right corner. Two SD card slots are placed along the left edge, near two SD card status LEDs. At the bottom of the panel is the built-in display. Up and Down buttons are to the left of the display, and Back and Enter buttons are displayed to the right of the display. Back is at the upper-right, and Enter is at the lower-right.

With the SM5 open and lying flat, the battery compartment takes up most of the right half. The battery bracket is a long, narrow, contoured piece of plastic that can be stored in a compartment along the right edge of the battery tray. Between the battery tray and the lower interior face of the enclosure, a 3.5 mm TRS headphone socket faces the user. To the immediate right of the headphone socket are two small plastic connectors for the acoustic microphone stubs.
