You can use a cable lock to protect the SM5 from theft, and you can use a padlock to prevent anyone from opening the recorder's enclosure.
About this task
In some situations, a cable lock can serve as both a security measure and a way to mount the recorder to a tree or structure. For example, if you are mounting to a tree that has branches within reach, you can loop the cable lock over the branches to hold the recorder in place without using excess force. In other situations, such as when mounting to a smooth wooden pole, you may need to use a second mounting method to hold the recorder in place, while a cable lock only serves to prevent theft.
Regardless of the mounting method you use, you can also use a simple padlock to prevent people from opening the SM5 enclosure and accessing its controls.
You will need the following items:
- A cable lock with a maximum diameter of 3/8 in. (10.0 mm)
- (Optional) A means of mounting the SM5, such as a nylon strap, bungie cord, or trail camera mount
- A padlock with a maximum shackle diameter of 1/4 in. (6.35 mm)
