Run the Internal Microphone Test Routine - SM5

Song Meter SM5 User Guide

Core Product
SM5
Accessory
The SM5 has an internal test speaker that can be used to test the functionality of the acoustic stub microphones and audio circuitry.

About this task

The SM5 has a small, internal speaker that can be used for basic audio tests. When the test routine runs, the speaker outputs a series of tones at different frequencies, and the SM5 measures how its built-in microphones respond to these tones. The recorder repeats the tone series with multiple permutations of recording settings to check that its high-pass filter and gain settings are also working correctly.

The microphone test routine does not test external, cabled microphones.

The microphone test routine can be used to check whether each microphone is functioning on a basic level, but it cannot measure microphone sensitivity with any precision. To measure microphone sensitivity, you should instead use an external microphone calibrator and the SM5's Calibration mode.

Procedure

  1. Move the SM5 to a quiet area.
In a noisy environment, the SM5 may falsely determine that its microphones have failed.
  2. Set the SM5 down on a flat surface, or mount it vertically.
Handling the SM5 during the test may produce false results.
  3. Start the test routine using the built-in interface or the mobile app:
    • Using the buttons and screen, select Utilities > Test microphones.
    • Pair the SM5 with the app, then select Configure > Utilities > Test microphones.

The SM5 will emit a series of beeps at different frequencies multiple times.

The screen will list the microphones that passed the test, followed by the microphones that failed.

If the test results say that any microphones failed the test, repeat the test in a very quiet environment, and avoid touching the SM5 during the test to prevent handling noise.

If the results persistently indicate a failed microphone, use an external microphone calibrator to test the microphone's sensitivity.
