If the SM5's internal clock resets to January 1st, 2000 when you replace the primary batteries, you should replace the recorder's backup clock battery.
Before you begin
You will need a new, CR2032 lithium battery.
About this task
When the SM5 has no batteries installed and no external power source connected, a coin-shaped CR2032 battery keeps the internal clock running. This battery will generally last several years depending on how much time the SM5 spends active and powered. More time spent in storage, without batteries installed, will drain the clock battery more quickly than time spent deployed.
When the clock battery dies, the SM5's internal clock will reset to midnight on January 1st, 2000 when you remove the primary power source. In this state, you can still use the SM5 as long as you update the clock each time you install new batteries or reconnect an external power source. After you set the clock, it will run as normal until the primary batteries or external power source dies.
