When planning a deployment, make sure the SM5 is updated, correctly programmed, and has necessary accessories ready to go.

Before you begin

Review this pre-deployment checklist and the other deployment checklists in this section. Deploy your SM5 and accessories for a short test deployment. Then, review your data to check for schedule errors or signs that you need to change your recording settings before you proceed to your full deployment.

About this task

Some deployments may call for instructions that are more specific than these steps or that differ from these steps. You are welcome to use this material as a starting point for your own written protocol.

Procedure

  1. Check if the SM5's clock has reset to January 2000, and replace the clock battery if it has.
  2. Charge all rechargeable batteries if using any.
    Rechargeable batteries might include internal batteries (such as NiMH or lithium-ion batteries), external third-party batteries, or the Wildlife Acoustics Power Kit's built-in batteries.
  3. Format all SD cards.
  4. Install the latest version of the Song Meter Configurator from the Apple App Store® or Google Play™.
  5. Update the SM5's firmware if a new version is available.
  6. Use the mobile app or desktop configurator to program your settings and estimate your battery and SD card needs.
    You can program your settings using the SM5's built-in buttons and display, but this does not provide battery life and SD card estimations.
  7. Check that the time zone is set correctly, accounting for daylight saving time or summer time.
    • Pair the SM5 with the mobile app to match the recorder's time zone to your phone or tablet's time zone.
    • Using the built-in buttons and display, go to Settings > Time & location > Time zone.
  8. If you used the mobile or desktop configurator to configure your settings, apply your settings to the recorder using an SD card or by pairing with the mobile app.
  9. Test the function of all built-in and external microphones.
  10. Write down which external microphones you will use and which ports they should connect to.
    These should match the Channel settings you programmed.
  11. Using the built-in screen or the mobile app, check that all settings were correctly applied.
  12. Install your batteries and SD cards, then turn off the SM5 during transit.
  13. Label the outside of the SM5 with contact information using a weather-resistant sticker or tape.
    Do not put paper or other materials inside the SM5, as this can prevent the enclosure from sealing and allow water to get inside.
  14. Pack all necessary equipment.
    The following are some items you may want to bring:
    • SM5
    • smartphone or tablet with the Song Meter Configurator installed
    • batteries or external power source with power cable
    • SD cards
    • external microphones and microphone cables
    • mounting equipment (poles, tripod, straps, screws, zip-ties)
    • cable lock and/or padlock
    • toothbrush for cleaning debris out of the enclosure gasket
