Install Eleven Lithium-Ion Batteries - SM5

Song Meter SM5 User Guide

Core Product
SM5
Accessory

For the longest possible deployments without an external power source, use eleven high-quality, rechargeable Li-ion batteries.

About this task

The SM5's battery tray can accommodate eleven 18650 batteries, or between one and six 18650 batteries.

Important: Using seven to ten batteries is not recommended. This quantity does not leave space for the battery bracket, and unfilled slots allow other batteries to rattle loose.

Procedure

  1. Disconnect any external power source from the SM5.
You cannot use both internal batteries and external power simultaneously.
  2. Ensure that your batteries meet the following criteria:
    • They are protected, button-top cells.
    • Their size specification is "18650."
    • They are all fully charged.
  3. Insert six batteries into the battery tray, filling the first layer of slots.
Note the directional battery icons embossed in the rear face of the battery tray.
The flat, negative battery terminal should contact a spring on the left side of the battery tray. The positive, button-top battery terminal should contact the flat plate on the right side of the battery tray.
  4. Insert five more batteries into the battery tray, staggered on top of the first layer of batteries.
All 18650 batteries should have the same orientation: negative-left, positive-right.

  5. Required: Set the SM5's voltage cutoff behavior.
    • Using the built-in display, go to Settings > Battery type > Lithium 18650.
    • Using the Configurator app, pair with the recorder and go to Configure > Battery Type > Lithium 18650.

Choosing the correct Battery type allows the SM5 to maximize its runtime, and it allows the Song Meter Configurator mobile app to accurately estimate battery life percentage.

If the Battery type setting is incorrect, the SM5 may shut itself down prematurely, and battery percentage readings will not be correct.
