The SM5 ships with two acoustic stub microphones preinstalled, but you can install new ones if your microphones are damaged.
About this task
You will need:
- 5/8″ open wrench or adjustable wrench
- Acoustic Stub Microphone, Product Code: MIC-STUB-AU-V2
Procedure
- Pass the new stub microphone's wires into the recorder.
-
Using one hand, screw the microphone clockwise into the white hex nut. Use your
other hand to rotate the microphone wires in the same direction.
This prevents twisting the wires, which can cause them to break.
-
Tighten the microphone only until the plastic body of the microphone contacts
the plastic of the recorder enclosure. Do not overtighten.
If needed, you may use a 5/8″ or adjustable wrench.
-
Route the twisted red and black wires to avoid excess noise and connect the
square plug into the appropriate connector.
The microphone wires can pick up excess electronic noise if they are routed incorrectly.
-
To connect the left-hand stub microphone, tuck the wire into the area
below the battery compartment so that it forms gentle curves, and
connect it to the left-most port.
-
To connect the right-hand stub microphone, tuck the wire into the
right-most end of the area below the battery compartment and connect the
plug to the right-most port.
Do not allow the wire to extend leftwards across the lower compartment. In this arrangement, the microphone wires pick up additional electronic noise from the nearby circuitry.
-
To connect the left-hand stub microphone, tuck the wire into the area
below the battery compartment so that it forms gentle curves, and
connect it to the left-most port.
-
Check that the SM5 can detect the connected
microphone.
- Power on the recorder and go to Settings > Channel.
- Map the left stub microphone to Acoustic Channel 1, or map the right stub microphone to Acoustic Channel 2.
- Set the other acoustic channel to None.
-
Exit the Channel
menu.
If the SM5 cannot detect the installed microphone, it will display a warning message. For example, Warning: left stub missing!
- Remap your other channels to the microphones you want to use.
