About this task

The SD Association's official formatting software is the simplest tool for reformatting your SD cards using a computer.

Procedure

  1. Download the SD Association's formatting tool for your computer's operating system and install it.
  2. Insert the SD card you wish to format into an SD card reader attached to your computer.
  3. Open the SD Card Formatter application.

    The application has a simple interface. When you select a card, it displays the type of format the card uses and its capacity. You can then select either a Quick format or Overwrite format, enter a Volume label, and begin the Format.
  4. Use the Select card menu to select your SD card.
    Important: The SD Card Formatter has the ability to format other storage drives. Take care not to accidentally format any drive other than your SD card.
  5. Under Formatting options, select Quick format.
  6. Optional: Use the Volume label field to enter a name for your SD card.
  7. Select Format.
  8. Eject the SD card from your computer according to your operating system's instructions.
