Beginning Deployment Checklist - SM5

Song Meter SM5 User Guide

Core Product
SM5
Accessory

When you arrive at the deployment location, follow these steps to confirm the SM5 is ready to record.

Procedure

  1. Check that your batteries are oriented correctly and were not knocked loose during travel.
  2. Install any cabled, external microphones you want to use, taking care to use the same ports that you mapped in the Channel menu.
  3. Turn the SM5 on.
  4. Update the SM5's clock and location.
    • Using a smartphone, pair the configurator app with the SM5. The app will prompt you to update location during pairing.
    • If GPS sync is set to Once or Daily, turn the SM5 on at the deployment site. The SM5 will attempt to acquire location and time data using its internal GPS/GLONASS antenna after it is switched on.
    • Manually edit the clock and location settings under Settings > Time & location.
  5. Check the SM5's status and resolve any SD card error messages.
  6. Optional: Record voice notes about the deployment using the Instant record function.
  7. Latch the SM5 shut, making sure debris doesn't prevent the enclosure from sealing.
  8. Install locks and mount the recorder, taking care not to use excess force.
Young trees may grow and put additional strain on the recorder over the course of a long deployment.

Results

The SM5 will automatically run its programmed schedule when it is closed and powered on.
