When you arrive at the deployment location, follow these steps to confirm the SM5 is ready to record.
Procedure
- Check that your batteries are oriented correctly and were not knocked loose during travel.
- Install any cabled, external microphones you want to use, taking care to use the same ports that you mapped in the Channel menu.
- Turn the SM5 on.
-
Update the SM5's clock and location.
- Using a smartphone, pair the configurator app with the SM5. The app will prompt you to update location during pairing.
- If GPS sync is set to Once or Daily, turn the SM5 on at the deployment site. The SM5 will attempt to acquire location and time data using its internal GPS/GLONASS antenna after it is switched on.
- Manually edit the clock and location settings under Settings > Time & location.
- Check the SM5's status and resolve any SD card error messages.
- Optional: Record voice notes about the deployment using the Instant record function.
- Latch the SM5 shut, making sure debris doesn't prevent the enclosure from sealing.
-
Install locks and mount the recorder, taking care not to use excess
force.
Young trees may grow and put additional strain on the recorder over the course of a long deployment.
