Is there a maximum total length for microphone cables? Do long microphone cables affect signal quality?
It is possible to connect multiple microphone cables in a single run between a Song Meter and an external microphone.
We have tested the characteristics of an SMM-U2 ultrasonic microphone connected to a Song Meter SM4BAT FS recorder both with and without 200 meters of additional microphone cable. With the additional cable, we found a slight increase (less than 5 dB) in both signal level and noise level at frequencies above 60 kHz, up to 140 kHz. This had no discernible effect on signal-to-noise ratio across the frequency spectrum.
When using long runs of microphone cable, be sure to secure the cable such that the cable's weight is not pulling directly on any connection points.
